In the Book of Samuel…

thomas jefferson quote | government rule In the book of Samuel which took place over 4000 years ago, God warned us about government. Yet, man still hasn’t learned about the dangers of having a government or a person that hasn’t been appointed by God to lead a nation. God explained to Israel exactly what would happen if they chose to go this route.

So far, as you can see, man has not learned his lesson. What exactly are the benefits of having a government, a king, a dictator, or some type of ruler to run a nation, rather then have God lead us?

Or, For God to anoint one that will be His representative here on earth? I, myself can not see why we need to elect someone or have some form of government to tell us what to do. I would much rather have God rule over us.

Read This From 1 Samuel 8:1 – 20

When Samuel grew old, he appointed his two sons as judges over Israel. The name of the firstborn was Joel, that of the younger Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. But his sons did not follow his ways; they wanted money, taking bribes and perverting justice.

Then all the Elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. Look, they said to him,’you are old, and your sons do not follow your ways. So give us a king to rule over us, like the other nations’.

It displeased Samuel that they should say,’let us have a king to rule us’, so he prayed to God. But God said to Samuel, ‘Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for it is not you they have rejected; they have rejected me from ruling over them.

All they have done to me from the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, they deserted me and served other gods, they are doing now to you. Well then, obey their voice; only, you must warn them solemnly and instruct them in the rights of the king who is to reign over them.

The Disadvantages of the Monarchy

All that God had said, Samuel repeated to the people who were asking him for a king. He said,’these will be of rights of the king who is to reign over you. He will take your sons and assign them to his chariotry and calvary, and they will run in front of his chariot.

He will use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he will make them plough his ploughland and harvest his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.

You will also take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers. He will then take the best of your fields, of your vineyards and olive groves and give them to his officials. He will take the best of your man servants and maid servants, of your cattle and your donkeys and make them work for him.

He will tithe your flocks and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out on account of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but on that day God will not answer you.

The people refused to listen to the words of Samuel. They said,’No! We want a king’, so that we in our turn can be like the other nations; our king shall rule us and be our leader and fight our battles.’

Samuel’s Prophecy Is True Today

After all these years of having some form of government established in nation’s like the United States, England and Israel they still can’t seem to get it right. They are supposed to be God fearing nations, they have fallen away from God and God is withdrawing His blessings.

When a nation falls away from God or rejects His law and commandments, that nation provokes God to anger. God then curses that nation as it is written in Leviticus 26.

These nations have seen so many troubled times, whether it would be with war, economic troubles, corruption, terrorism, violence, or just out right bad decisions.

People Put Their Hopes in the Wrong Place

It seems like people just don’t want to be bothered with making decisions, it’s like they would rather put it on someone else. Is this some type of fear?

Would most of the people rather be followers, so that they can feel more secure by putting all the burden on someone else? Do the people actually have a right to place the blame on the ones that they elected for any trouble that follows?

From what we’ve seen with man’s plan, we have a never ending battle for peace, fighting crime, corruption, diseases, famine, poverty, injustice and so on. As you can see, man’s plan has never worked. So, I have to ask, what is so wrong with the plan that God has laid out for us?

God’s Plan Works

With God’s plan, there would be peace, prosperity, security, no unemployment, nobody homeless, protection, no diseases, no abortions, no immorality, no neighbor fighting with neighbor, no famine, no poverty, no corruption, no birth defects, no hate, very little crime and many other things.

Would it really be that bad to have God as our supreme leader over our nation? God gave us the right to choose, unfortunately man hasn’t been making very good choices, have they?

Read the Book of Samuel and other areas in the Bible for instructions on how to live. After all, God created us and we should listen to Him if we want to live healthy and prosperous lives. He will also give us protection from our enemies.
